Good Shit, 2024
A pair of floor lamps that whilst being made of different components, still feel related to each other. “The two bastard siblings” if you will. With matching bases, or similar visible hardware, there is a consistent language tying the two together, all whilst increasing the usability and simplicity. Allowing human- and mechanically-based design to intersect.
A piece of bent aluminium sheet or a powder coated steel tube... each individual component had it’s own subtle charm. But I suppose what excited me was the prospect of highlighting this subtlety. Not trying to work them into some convoluted design where they’d never be seen again, but instead fitting my design to ensure that these components were the final result.
With my task being to design ‘simply’, my aim became working out how to break down the elements associated with traditional lighting using basic mechanical solutions.
How do I dim, reflect, diffuse, project, focus and move a light source all whilst not overcomplicating the final form? With these questions being core to my project I set about designing two lighting systems that addressed at least one of these factors.
